sunset, lake wendouree [ballarat portrait photography]

When I plan a shoot, I usually have three kinds of ideas: (1) shots I have planned out in my head where I know where my subjects will be, where I'll be, what the scenery will be, what the light will be like, how close I'm going to be...every single detail (2) locations I want to try and ideas of which direction I might shoot in and (3) locations I come across during the shoot that look pretty cool so I'll give it a try.

This shot was in the first category, and I'm so thrilled with how it turned out. Ballarat turned on its best this afternoon and the sunset was perfect.

I'll be showing more from this session later this month when I'm done editing.

I've also changed my watermark, in case anyone cares :)

I don't normally work in b&w because colour is what I love most about photographs, but this session seemed to lend itself to a bit of monochrome.

You've seen Ash before but not in this colour palette.

This is the amazing and gorgeous Ash whom I met last week. I haven't shot a single woman (and her pretty awesome boyfriend) in sooooo long and I was absolutely dying to get out there in our perfect sunny Ballarat weather and try some new locations.

Here's Ash with her sweet man Anton. I <3 this photo of these two together! They look so happy.

Are they not one of the most photogenic couples ever?
Picture
Ash looking cool-as-a-cucumber...

My absolute favourite shot from the whole shoot. Could she be any more gorgeous?

Well...maybe she could...

I nearly fell off the platform at the railway station trying to take this one. Only four feet down onto solid asphalt, nothing to worry about... ;) Totally worth it.

Thanks again to Ash and Anton for such a fun afternoon. Special thanks to Anton who wasn't expecting to be in front of the camera and hadn't done his hair (hence the hat!) ;)

engagement portrait session, williamstown, vic (and why it's my favourite shoot ever)

If you've been following me for awhile you may have seen my post about this shoot on my old blog (I'd love to show you where that is, but honestly I can't even remember and you don't really want to see it, this one is much prettier).

This couple were both serving in the Royal Australian Navy at the time of their shoot. From the moment I knew I would be shooting them I had this shot in my mind, and I was unbelievably impressed with myself when it turned out exactly as I'd hoped.
That's when I knew. I could do this. This photography business thing. I thought of an idea and then I made it happen. I'd like to tell you that from that moment everything fell into place, but of course that's not the case. That's another story, but that's why this is my favourite shoot.

I still have vivid memories of laying stretched out on my stomach on the old wooden pier on this gorgeous warm February day, tourists stepping over me, giving me strange looks. I didn't care, I had a camera in my hand and everything was right with the world.

The ship in the background is the HMAS Castlemaine, which has been at Gem Pier in Williamstown for as long as I can remember (judging by Wikipedia, I think it's probably been there since before I was born).
